Tips for Healthy
Eating
(Arabic Language) |

|
| The YCA has created a set of laminated
credit-card sized cards for the Yemeni community.
After consultation, one of the difficulties identified within
the community was making an appointment with the local GP, due to problems
with identifying the need for an interpreter. This resulted in the YCA
Health Development Officer (HDO) being inundated with requests from
non-English speaking members of the community to make appointments on their
behalf. After consulting with the elders it was agreed that a GP
communication card would be an ideal solution.
The following
inscription appears on the card:
"I am unable to speak
English and would like to see a doctor. Would you please book an
appointment for me to see the doctor with an Arabic-speaking (preferably
Yemeni) interpreter. Thank you" |

Yemeni
Cookbook
 |
A six-month
project which ran from February to July 2004 involved the creation of a
Yemeni cookbook.
This project
consulted and made use of the considerable expertise and experience of many
Yemeni women in the community, and their families, in helping to read,
write, draw and cook. |
| A proper launch party was held
for the book, and copies distributed to health professionals such a Diabetic
nurses and dieticians, in order to help them use a better awareness of the
Yemeni diet when planning treatments. In all, over 500 copies of the
cookbook have been printed and distributed. |

Coronary Health Risk Screenings
Held in West Bromwich in February and March
2006, and open to all members of the community of both genders of age 25 and
over, this offered free screening tests to identify individuals at risk of
coronary heart disease. |
 |
| Tests carried out
included blood pressure checks, blood glucose monitoring, cholesterol
testing, body mass index tests and health history checks. The final
results were assessed by a licensed medical practitioner, and advice
(including GP referrals) given to all participants.
Overall, 85 male and female individuals participated in
the screening tests, and it was identified that a significant number of male
elders were at significant risk of coronary heart disease. |

Leisure Centre (Tipton) and Haden Hill Leisure Centre (Cradley Heath), with
the aim of allowing women and young girls to participate in culturally
sensitive physical activities. The sessions also incorporated
aqua-aerobics.
The
sessions, partly funded by Sport England and the Scarman Trust, proved to be
very popular, with 25 young people and 35 women accessing the project.
